Shell is taking a big step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions from liquified natural gas (LNG), thanks to an innovative use of AI, cloud and data. The energy giant has aggregated vast amounts of data – including current and historical information from sensors measuring pressure, temperature and flow rates – into the cloud. AI then analyses this data to continually fine-tune performance, in order to minimize CO2 emissions. At one LNG plant, for example, this “Real Time Process Optimiser” has cut boil-off gas flares by 70% when the plant is operating at full capacity. Shell is working to scale this solution across its LNG operations, potentially lowering significantly the carbon footprint of natural gas.
