Belgrade Waste Management project

The Belgrade Waste Management project is a €400 million public-private partnership (PPP) that is overhauling the City of Belgrade’s waste management system. To remediate one of the world’s most polluting dumpsites spanning 40 hectares near the Danube River,1 the City of Belgrade created the Beo Čista Energija, a Special Purpose Vehicle company with numerous private sector partners, including ITOCHU Corporation (Japan), VEOLIA Group (France) and Marguerite, a pan-European infrastructure fund (Luxembourg).

The project includes the design, financing, construction and operation of the new Energy from Waste facility, the new sanitary landfill, the construction and demolition waste facility, the leachate treatment facility and the landfill gas facility. The project is certified to reduce Belgrade’s greenhouse gas emissions by 210,000 tons of CO2 annually. In addition to the environmental impact, the project is creating jobs, upskilling workers and enhancing the quality of life for those who work at and live near the landfill.
